Buongiorno and Bismillah,
If you follow me on Instagram, you might already know that I became a vegan! You don’t know the reason why, though. At the beginning of 2017, I decided that I would do all I can to improve myself, and picked five “impossible” goals to achieve. #1 on the list was to be “VEGAN FOR A WEEK.” I planned to do this the week after Ramadan, inshallah, as a diet. Since I am a good student, I started doing my homework in advance. Now I am starting a series of blog posts about it, with the intention of explaining different aspects of this journey. I may say things that vegans and non-vegans may not like, but hey I just started so don’t judge me!
What is veganism?
Definition from The VeganSociety: “Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.”
What does this mean?
It means that when you decide to become vegan, you decide to not take part in (took out of) the economic process of a product that comes from harming animals. So, not killing animals, not selling animal based products, not buying cow’s milk, not using wool or leather clothes or makeup that doesn’t say “cruelty-free or vegan.”
Why do people go vegan?
There are so many reasons, and people get into it for any of them, but then become invested in all of them. No, it’s not just a plant based diet. Here are the main three:
The cattle industry is not your local farm with wide green fields… It is a really dirty, “mafiosa,” and cruel industry. Think about the global population. Now think about your grocery store, the meat aisle, and the dairy (milk, butter, cheese) aisle. It is so normal to us to see those products up there like that without having to think about it. Like, “oh damn, how many cows do we have to kill to have all this meat, or how many cows are having a baby to be able to produce milk ???” Due to the excessive demand, the dairy industry is insane, as is the amount of dairy cows needed to sustain it.
Now let’s get back to reality with some numbers:
45% of the global land is occupied by livestock (cows, pigs, sheep, chicken etc.). That means that land humans could be using is instead occupied by the animal agriculture industry (whether for grazing, sustaining, or slaughtering). There is no “overpopulation,” there is an excessive consumption of meat!
33% of global arable land is devoted to livestock feed. We don’t only need space for these animals to live on to then kill them to eat them, but we also taking space to farm food for them. While in the meantime, the space that one cow needs to live on in order to produce a few nice juicy steaks could have been used to produce tons of plants that could have fed many more.
School systems, media outlets, and the government have told us that what causes the Greenhouse Effect is the pollution from cars, and factories, as well as spray bottles like deodorant… And “blah blah blah,” but all of these combined together have only a 20% impact on the problem. The remaining 80% is methane. Yes, cows fart. You are probably laughing right now, but the excessive, unnatural presence of these animals for our egoistic needs, is changing our climate drastically. If you don’t believe me watch COWSPIRACY ON NETFLIX. If you think, “that can’t be true, why should the government lie to us?” If you don’t know what lobbying is, then you sweet innocent child, please go look it up.
HEALTH: So let’s be clear here, I’m not a doctor, but DIABETES IS NOT CAUSED BY SUGAR, DIABETES IS CAUSED BY FAT! If you eat a cake, it has sugar, and butter in it. It’s not gonna be the sugar that makes you fat, it’s gonna be the butter! The sugar is carbs, carbs are for you to burn, and transform them into energy. When the excessive amount of fat cause you to develop diabetes it means that your body is not able to accept sugar in a proper way.
Largest cause of diabetes, and heart diseases is dairy products.
First cause of cancer in the USA is meat. Why? They pump those beasts with shit, and chemicals that we then end up eating. This is absolutely disgusting. And don’t think that they only do it to cows… Do you remember that fish with three eyes from THE SIMPSON’S? This is where the inspiration came from.
Not to mention that 70% of the human population is lactose intolerant. There must be a reason for that! We are not supposed to be feeding on the breasts of a mommy animal whose milk was created to help her baby grow quickly.
ANIMALS: How many of you would grow a little sheep, get her preggo, steal her baby before she can even see it, then steal her milk. Get her preggo again, take the baby, and the milk, and keep going until she’s almost dead, and her mammels are bleeding. From there, slit her throat, hang her to drain the blood, peel the skin off, and cut up the meat? How many could do that? And how many of us are ignoring the fact that this is happening?
One more thing we get disgusted about is the idea that some people, especially infamously, the Chinese, eat cats, and dogs (see: Yulin Festival), but we find it okay to eat other animals like cows, and chickens. This hypocrisy is insane. Someone can be condemning another for eating bunnies or whatever, while simultaneously chomping down on a beef burger.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to being a good human being, and not an a**hole, and to try to do what you can to “make this planet a better place”. What we eat is a huge part of our day to day life, and is where we can make a real, and lasting impact.
I tried to share with you some of the most important information, but of course, there is a lot lot more, so to make it easy for yourself, please go watch COWSPIRACY or WHAT THE HEALTH or FORKS OVER KNIVES or just look up Gary Yourofsky’s speech on YouTube.
A huge thank you to the people that helped me through the beginning of this experiment and helped me writing this post. Especially to Diana @ddgetoutofmylab on Instagram!
